Why Use Video Screens In Worship?

I [Mark Bates] mentioned in a recent congregational letter that we plan to install video screens in the sanctuary in August. We have wanted to do this for some time, but thought it was cost prohibitive. However, recently a solution was presented that is both cost effective and will be aesthetically pleasing. Part of the plan calls for rearranging the organ speakers to improve their sound as well.

There are a number of advantages to using screens tastefully in worship. First, by presenting words to songs on the screen, we are able to lift our heads up as we sing. When missionaries visit, screens will allow us to see the work that they are doing rather than just hearing about it. We will be able to have visual testimonies about what God is doing in various ministries of the church like VBS and our Refugee Ministry. In preaching, I will now be able to show maps of areas, charts, and verse structures, that can help communicate God’s Word more effectively (something I often longed to do when preaching through Genesis). For those who are visual learners, this can be a wonderful tool in learning Scripture.

As one who has used video in the past in worship, I am aware of both the dangers and delights this technology affords us. I believe it will be a tremendous tool to increase learning, enhance worship, and communicate more effectively, particularly to the younger generations.

  1. Church video screens are a great addition to services. My church has video walls and everyone loves them. They are also useful for other types of services the church my have like funerals. I know at my church they use them to play slide shows the families have made before and after the service, the slide shows are always very moving and the large screens help to make sure everyone can see the pictures.
