Missionary of the Week

John and Janel Breitenstein
FamilyLife Ministries
Little Rock, Arkansas

You won't have to look far to see that families and lives are unraveling at an unbelievable rate, and that it costs us--as individuals, as families, as a society, as the church--dearly.

Janel and I believe we're not alone in our struggle for the things that matter: seeking answers for the questions at the core of who we are, looking for tools to take our relationships from survival to thriving and life-giving, and longing for a legacy that changes the world on an eternal level. We're in this for our family, for your family, for generations to come, and most importantly, for the name of Christ. We long for His kingship to be more complete in each heart, knowing that this is where we'll each find ourselves the most satisfied.

We crave God's honor and our enjoyment of Him in everything. We are passionate for truth and reconciliation; for helping people to find genuine connections with one another and we work out these passions in the mission of making every home a godly home.

As we considered our stories, passions, and the cause before us, they seemed to converge on ministry to families. Our attraction to FamilyLife laid in its integrity of leadership and its effectiveness. In September of 2003, we were accepted as staff members with FamilyLife and Campus Crusade for Christ. This was a first step in the long journey of raising our initial financial support, which covers our salary, benefits, taxes...you get the idea (this is a journey we continue as our financial support wanes and as our family grows). We reported to Little Rock from Colorado Springs in June of 2005, right around Baden's first birthday. We're enjoying our current roles and responsibilities in the fight for the family.

John's Role with FamilyLife
I work in the Human Resources Department as the Manager of Staff Relations. My role is to build into our staff and help them to be as effective as possible. This means that I get to love on people, esteem them, build staff morale and help staff resolve conflicts that may arise. I do a lot of listening to individuals and to the organization as a whole. I enjoy being a resource for our staff when they are facing difficult issues in ministry as well as personally. Additionally, I work on strategies that aim to enhance our ability to reach the vision of every home a godly home. The great benefit of my role in the ministry is that I get to minister to and serve fellow laborers of the Gospel and try to help provide an environment that fosters ministry and builds one another up in love.
John's responsibilities...
-Planning All Staff Day Of Prayer Events
-Planning All Staff Meetings
-Organizational Communications Plan
-Lead Staff Relations Team
-Conflict Resolution
-Staff Morale
-Staff Exit Interviews

Janel's Role with FamilyLife
I have chosen to focus the bulk of my attention on raising our young children. It’s a position that bears great responsibility and that I'm honored to have. We see the discipleship and training of our children in the instruction of the Lord as a primary role in our lives, and we covet your prayers.

Six to ten hours of my week are dedicated to FamilyLife Publishing. My tasks are diverse, ranging from product creation, editing, and writing, and reviewing manuscripts. It's an exciting privilege for me to have this "outside" ministry that's so visibly effective even during this season of life. My latest completed projects have included creation and authorship of a small-groups resource and a book for families focused around a certain piece of church history (I am being intentionally vague...these projects are still "classified"). May God continue to establish the works of our hands (Psalm 90:17)!

Additional Responsibilities
Janel and I are privileged to be sent into this work by our family and friends, our church and other partnering churches, and by fellow followers of Jesus Christ. As missionaries we have the prayer support, emotional support, and financial support of a small army of people who believe in what God is doing through this ministry and through us. A portion of our time is devoted to the development and care of this team that God has given to undergird our work.
